A system under which the authority in the entity is centralized.
Centralization is justified on the belief that the concentration of powers is a more efficient way of governance - meaning that, under a centrelized system, organizations will run more effectively, and that policies will be formed and implemented more efficiently. In that sense, concentration of powers is believed to facilitate coherent action, and the most appropriate mobilization and application of resources.
Centralization is contrasted with subsidiarity.
