Balkanization
(20th century)
A theory of the fragmentation of states, its name derived from the area of south-eastern Europe.
States are broken up into smaller and more numerous units, formally autonomous but so small and so taken up with conflict amongst themselves that they present no threat to their more powerful neighbors.
